One of the independent types of equestrian sports, united under the auspices of the International Federation (FEI). Until 1924, vaulting was represented in the program of the Summer Olympic Games. An athlete engaged in this kind of equestrian sport is called a vaultier. In the Soviet Union in this kind of equestrian sport medals were played in every championship. Currently, the International and European Equestrian Federations hold official championships and championships in vaulting for athletes aged adults (over 18) and juniors (under 18). Modern pentathlon has its origins in the ancient world. Back then it included running, discus and javelin throwing, long jumping and wrestling. Today the pentathlon consists of show jumping, fencing, running, swimming and shooting. Both men and women compete in the event.

A little history
The complex of sports disciplines that includes horseback riding, mastering the sword and pistol shooting began to be used to train officers back in the 19th century. The pioneers in this area were the Swedes, and then their experience was adopted by other countries. This complex was called “officers’ pentathlon. It was included in the Olympics in 1912 and became a permanent part of the Olympics.

In the 40s of the 20th century, the discipline was renamed into pentathlon. And in 1948 the International Modern Pentathlon Union began its work in the capital of Great Britain, which was renamed the International Federation 40 years later. Since 1949 world championships in pentathlon began to take place. The first was held in Stockholm.

For a long time, the Swedes traditionally won the championship in international competitions. But since 1950 they were squeezed by athletes from Hungary and the Soviet Union. They won several times in a row both in team and individual events.

For a long time, the discipline was considered only for men. Women’s International Championships have been held since 1981, and women’s teams have been competing in the Olympics only since 2000.

The modern Olympic program differs significantly from the original. The duration of the sword fight was reduced from 3 minutes to one, the racing course now has a length of 0.6 km. The disciplines during the competitions may alternate in any order, but all are held on the same day. The last athletes compete in cross-country and show jumping.

Rules
The Pentathlon is evaluated according to a scoring system: points are awarded to athletes for each discipline and then added together. The maximum number of points for show jumping is 1200, and for the other components of the program – 1000. If an athlete exceeds the set standard, he or she earns additional points. Accordingly, if he/she does not achieve the set result, he/she loses points. The athlete who earns the maximum number of points, gets the right to start first in the race.

Shooting
Competitors shoot with a 4.5 mm air pistol at a stationary target at a distance of 10 m. The target has a diameter of 155 mm and consists of 10 concentric circles, numbered 1 to 10. Which circle the athlete hits, that is the number of points he earns per shot. If he hits the separating strip between the circles, he scores more points.

They shoot from a standing position, holding the gun with one hand. And this is quite difficult, because despite the small mass of the gun (1.5 kg) it is not easy to hold it during the whole allotted time. And any devices that support the hand with the pistol when shooting are not allowed.

Swimming
The water course has a length of 200 meters. Free style is used to overcome it. The start is according to the ranking of the athletes. The pentathlon establishes a certain ratio of time and points in swimming: overcoming the distance in 2:30 minutes by athletes and 2:40 by athletes counts for 1000 credit points. For every 0.3 seconds above, an additional 4 points are added, and for every 0.3 below, the same number of points is deducted.

Fencing
Athletes fight each other with epee in a circular system. Duration of the fight is up to the first prick, the maximum time is 1 minute. You can aim at any part of the body of your opponent, the shot is recorded with special equipment. If no one is hit, no one is awarded the win.

The athlete receives points based on the number of wins. If he wins 70% of fights, he earns 1000 credit points. Winning a fight over the limit brings 28 extra points, and each defeat over the limit entails the removal of points in the same amount.

Cross Country
The race is held on a cross-country or stadium track. This is the last event in the order of precedence. The length of the route is 3 km (4 laps). Based on the number of points earned by athletes in previous events, the order of start for each participant is determined. Equestrian cross-country, as an independent sport, is extremely rare. As a rule, it is part of the equestrian triathlon, namely its second stage. Cross-country is the overcoming of natural obstacles in a natural environment – ascents, descents, small rivers, ditches, earth embankments, fallen trees, logs, hedges, etc. As a separate discipline it is known as “cross-country” which competitions have local character and are not represented at federal or international level.

The length of the cross-country course is about 6 km. There are 24 to 36 obstacles on it. They can be natural or built in such a way that their appearance is as close to the natural as possible. For their arrangement we use logs, ditches, branches, trees, bushes, water.
All obstacles on the route are marked in a special way. Two flags are used for this purpose: a red flag is placed on the right side of the obstacle and a white one on the left. On red flag there may be a black stripe that means a rider may choose a different route around this obstacle and there will be no penalty. But it will be more time consuming.

The complexity of obstacles is achieved not by their height (maximum allowed – 1200 cm) but by their location, consistency and other features of the terrain design. All obstacles on the route, unlike courses for show jumping, are not destroyed when the horse touches them. They are called “dead”.

Each obstacle has a number marked with a color. The color of the marking indicates the level of the obstacle. The levels compete with each other. All obstacles and their levels are presented on a route map, which all riders should study before starting the race and also check during the race.

The equestrian crossing takes place outdoors, and the terrain includes both field and wooded terrain. A new terrain is chosen for each race, so the equestrian triathlon always takes place in different regions and even different parts of the globe.

As it was already said, natural obstacles on the route are supplemented by artificial ones, which are as close to natural as possible. This is done by designers. Their task – to organize obstacles so that a less experienced pair (horse + rider) on the lower levels could be prepared to overcome more difficult obstacles. Or on the contrary, to make it more difficult to take this or that obstacle for more professional competitors. For example experienced planners often place an obstacle on the side of a hill or on top of an earthen berm so that the horse cannot see in advance where he is jumping. A fence may also be placed in front of the beginning of a wooded area for the same purpose.

Terrain design is done correctly if obstacles are incorporated into the landscape in such a way that they appear to have been created by nature itself. They must also be placed so that the horse can escape when the rider makes a mistake.

Competition Rules
The equestrian crossing begins with the rider on the horse in a special starting box. The countdown begins, during which the pair is not allowed to go to the front of the box. Then the start signal is given and the participants get in motion.

Criteria for evaluating the results are the time of overcoming the distance, the levels of obstacles taken, as well as the number of penalty points accrued.

Penalties are imposed in the following cases:
Disobedience of the horse (1st refusal to take an obstacle – 20 points, 2nd – 40 points, 3rd – disqualification of the pair). If the height of an obstacle does not exceed 30 cm, the horse is allowed to jump from the spot. In all other cases, stopping in front of an obstacle is considered a refusal. A horse may also take a step to the side and a step backwards is regarded as a refusal to take the obstacle.
If an obstacle is overcome out of order, it is deemed to be a disqualification.
Jumping over the fence in the wrong direction as indicated in the movement diagram – disqualification.
Falling from a horse – disqualification. Rushing from a horse is permitted at any time on the course, but it must not be related to taking an obstacle.

Trotting – tests of horses of trotting breeds for agility in trotting. Usually horses are tested harnessed to a trotter, a special two-wheeled carriage designed for trotting. Less commonly, trotting is done under saddle. The person who drives the trotter (in the rocking carriage or in the saddle) is called the rider.

Originally, light-driven horses with a steady trotting course were specially bred for transportation of people in the XVIII-XIX centuries. As the quick trot is considered an artificial allure, which is not capable of every harness horse, people tried to identify horses which were actually capable of a quick trot by testing, so that the animals selected based on the results of these tests could be sent to the breed. The first trotting races were held in the Netherlands in 1554. Then such trials began to take place in England, where they tested the famous and frisky at the time Norfolk trotters and in France, where Norman horses ran. Initially, horses were tested at a trot only under saddle, and in France this tradition has been preserved to this day. The first American trotting races in the United States in 1806 were also held under saddle.

Today, horses of several trotting breeds are tested around the world. In the United States, Canada and most European countries, American trotters are tested. In France, French trotting horses are tested for the most part, as well as French-American crossbreds. In Scandinavian countries in addition to the prize trotters – American and Franco-American, local trotters are tested. These are the so-called Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian cold-blooded horses. The trotting rules vary slightly from country to country, but most of the rules are the same. Trotters come to the racetrack at the age of two, their prime age is 2-3 years (the U.S., Canada), 4-6 years (some other European countries), 6-10 years (France, Sweden). A trotter finishes his racing career at the average age of 8-12 years. Each hippodrome has its own age limitations, for example on Vensen hippodrome trotters can not perform over 10 years old and on many Swedish hippodromes trotters can run successfully at 12 and 14 years old. The competition of a group of trotters on the racetrack is called “race”. The horse in the race should run a clear stable trot. Switching to a gallop is called a failure. In some countries, the failure immediately disqualifies the horse.

Receiving the start in different countries, or even on the same racetrack is different. In the U.S., Canada, trotters mostly take the start with an autostart – a special machine that aligns the race participants behind them, distributes them according to their numbers and accelerates them before the start to the maximum speed. Autostart car was invented in the 1930s in the United States, thanks to this method of starting is almost impossible false starts and loss of time due to poor acceleration. In Europe autostart is also used, but often also trotters start with a voltstart, i.e. they start by running out of the turn. In this case, false starts are much more common, an even start is determined by the laser beam.

The distances at which trotters are tested also vary depending on the country where the race takes place. For example, in the U.S., most of the trotters are tested at a short distance of 1 mile (1609 m). In Europe, the races at such a distance is very small, there trotters are running at medium to long distances: from 2100 m to 4125 m.

Riding horses participate in the race, during the trials they gallop, they are controlled by jockeys, they sit in the saddles. It is impossible to say “this trotter won the race” because trotters do not participate in races.
